An Analysis of Characteristics Affecting the Severity of Child Maltreatment Cases: A Factorial Survey Approach
Jung Sun-Young

Abstract
This study aims to investigate the factors affecting the severity of child maltreatment cases. For this, it adopted factorial survey method and created around 580 child maltreatment cases using maltreatment types, and characteristics of perpetrators and child victims. A total of 1,000 cases were selected through random duplicate extraction and each 10 cases were randomly allocated to 100 respondents. Main findings are as follows. First, respondents tended to regard sexual abuse and neglect more severe than other types of child maltreatment. Second, while the age of children and the types of family structure did not affect the severity, the disability of children had a statistically significant effect. Third, while the relationship between perpetrators and child victims did not affect the severity of child maltreatment cases, jobs and personality trait of perpetrators did. Fourth, some of characteristics regarded typical in child maltreatment cases affected the severity of the cases. Based on these findings, it is suggested that the educational programs designed for the prevention and intervention of child maltreatment need to include cases which tend to be overlooked by mandated reporters and the general public.
